Palm has announced the Treo 680 smartphone on November 206 at a press conference at DigitalLife in New York City. The Treo 680 is a Palm OS powered quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE smartphone.

At dimensions of 2.29″ x 4.40″ x 0.8″ inches (58.4 x 111.8 x 20.3 mm) and weighs in at 5.5 ounces (156g), this smaller and more stylish newcomer is clearly aimed at the tech-savvy casual users rather than heavy-hitting professional users.

The Treo 680 smartphone features an internal antenna and slim form factor with design similar to the Treo 750v, making the device smaller and sleeker than its Treo predecessors in the United States.

It runs a 312 MHz Intel processor and has 64MB of user available storage memory and 64MB of SDRAM. The Treo 680 comes with a 320 x 320 pixel vibrant color touch-screen display for viewing web pages, photos, media and more.

The Treo 680 features a full size SD slot for memory expansion and a slimmer 1200 mAh rechargeable battery for up to 4 hours talking time.

Although it uses the slower GSM network rather than 3G but this is not an issue for casual emailing. The same goes for the lack of Wi-Fi in order to reduce the unit’s cost and complexity.

Bluetooth v1.2 wireless and IR are included as well as a VGA digital camera in Treo 680. But you may feel disappointed by the VGA camera. It’s not bad in itself but it’s easily outclassed by the multi-megapixel cameras in most mobile phones.

The Treo 680 also has integrated email and web capabilities, so users can stay in touch with family, colleagues and friends. The messaging application on the Treo 680 displays text-messaging conversations as “threaded chats,” similar to IM, so users can see their entire conversation with a particular person.

The Treo 680 ships with many of the same improved apps found on the Treo 700p including:

built in Pocket Tunes, audio and video streaming and voice memos.

VersaMail 3.5 is included and is now simply called “Email.”

The Blazer 4.5 browser includes a number of speed and caching improvements to the browsing experience.

Customers can view, edit and share Microsoft Word and Excel documents on their Treo 680 smartphones in addition to viewing full-featured Adobe PDF files and Microsoft PowerPoint presentations

The Treo 680 smartphone also can be used as an MP3 player and has an integrated digital camera, camcorder and video player.

Reviews from CNET Reviews:
The good: The Palm Treo 680 features a sleeker design; integrated Bluetooth with the ability to use it as a wireless modem; more user-accessible memory; and e-mail capabilities. It also offers a bright touch screen and productivity tools and is easy to use.

The bad: The smart phone doesn’t have integrated Wi-Fi nor does it support Palm’s Wi-Fi card or voice dialing. What’s more, the VGA camera is disappointing, the QWERTY keyboard is a bit cramped, and the speakerphone quality is a bit scratchy.

The bottom line: With a user-friendly interface, decent performance, and an affordable price point, the Palm Treo 680 is a good smart phone for the first-time buyer or for mobile users looking to be more productive on the road; we just wish it had a better camera and Wi-Fi support.
