Emporia Life for Your Grandma

The Emporia Life mobile phone made by Austrian manufacturer Emporia has been designed to be very easy to use, and it is a handset for people of retirement age. If you would like to buy a handset for your grandma or parent that are not use to high tech gadgets, and are having abit of trouble with eyesight, this is a right handset for them.

Emporia Life comes with some interesting feactures such as a hearing aid compatible loudspeaker, an emergency call system which can be activated with a single keypress, a very large 2.7″ display and a simple-to-use interface with detailed help.

Step forward the Emporia Life mobile, an Aussie-manufactured handset “designed with the older generation in mind”. Bells, whistles and frills are all eschewed in favour of a back-to-basics caller, complete with a large, orange-lit display, bigger buttons, a louder ring volume and a super-powerful vibration function.

Measuring 112 x 51 x 26mm and coming in at 152 grams, the Emporia Life is almost the same weight and size as the Sony Ericsson P990i, where we think it’s quite big, but this large size gives the Emporia Life a very large screen and a great big set of buttons. The buttons and keypad are all made to be easily found and read, and the phone is actually designed to be used most often from the closed position.

The default standby screen is actually the contacts list, meaning that there is no menu to deal with when grandma wants to call somebody. She just uses the up and down arrow keys to find the number she wants and then presses the big green OK key.

Another interesting feature is the ability to run off of normal AAA batteries in an emergency if the Li-Ion battery is dead. There is also a speakerphone function as well as the ability to send and receive text messages, including SMS multicast capabilities.

Emporia is working on another device that targets the 50 years old market. It is simplified to some extent like the EmporiaLife, but it is smaller and more compact for a person that still gets around a lot and potentially has a regular job.
