Motorola W230

Motorola W230

Last few days, Motorola has introduce their two new W series GSM handphones at the 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show, Motorola W230 and W270. These 2 handsets offer easy-to-user music capabilities, expandable memory with optional microSD card, clear audio in noisy environments and a simplified interface for text messaging.

Almost identical in terms of features to the Motorola W270 clamshell, the Motorola W230 is a very lightweight but basic phone with surprisingly good music playback capabilities.

A dedicated music key activates an integrated digital audio player which supports MP3 and other popular formats. You can store all the favorite songs using it’s optional microSD removable memory cards up to 2GB.

The W230 also come with FM radio with integrated Radio Data System(RDS). RDS allows to display artist, title and type of song playing on the radio.

Unfortunately, there is no camera and the screen is a very basic 128 x 128 pixel CSTN panel. The W230 lacks Bluetooth too. However, the phone weighs in at only 80 grams.

W230 offer Motorola CrystalTalk™ technology that helps reduce background noise. It has 9 hours maximum talktime. Besides, it has capacity to store up to text messages and phone contacts, and one click access to create text messages and the ability to access the Web.

Motorola describe the colour combinations as “licorice outlined in lustrous silver and dark titanium gray bordered in mandarin” - i.e. silver and orange. No pricing details have been given, but this is likely to be a very inexpensive device. Motorola say that the W270 should be available during Q1 2008.

I purchased this phone from Global Access in Bangalore on Feb 25. I am repenting my decision every day. Do not buy if you have ever used a Nokia. The user interface on Motorola W230 YUVA is Disastrous to say the least. Many menu commands do not work. For example Recent Calls > select > view > store does not respond. There are many such commands which simply do not respond. When you enter a contact, it comes up with dictionary mode to enter name! Messaging is a tedious experience. To put a full stop it takes seven key strokes! Very unpredictable behavior. Music player is so-so. You cannot select a song and expect it to continue to play from there on. You need to press PLAY button every time a song gets over, manually select next and press PLAY! There is no missed call list. You have to look at the received call list and look for which ones are checked and which ones are not to figure out missed calls. Every day i am finding a new anomaly in this phone. Motorola needs to update its user interface, it is pre-historic user interface Keys strokes respond very slowly. Takes ages to type. Just to type ‘no’ it takes more than 2seconds. Motorola does not respond to emails to customer care. No response to any complaints anywhere. I want to sell it for half the price.

I find the motorola w230 a good value for money phone. It
may not brag of having features of high end phones but given
its low price, motorola did not compromise on its quality.
The sound is good and it is equipped with basic useful tools
like calculator, currency converter, alarm, calendar,
stopwatch. And a big plus factor for this phone is its mp3
playing capability and slot for expanding memory up to 2G by
way of micro SD card. Motorola has responded to the demand
of those people who need an inexpensive phone with music
player. Though it is not equipped with a camera I think it
well suits those who are not allowed to carry cameraphones
around and the lack of this feature has allowed the phone to
be priced lower which is good for those on a budget given the
current economic crisis.
I think it is the cheapest phone with mp3 player
capability. And the interface is as user friendly as Nokia’s. I
have been a Nokia user since 2000 but I didn’t have a hard
time adjusting to the motorola w230’s interface. The 5 way
navigation keys also serves as music keys which is easy to
use as it is positioned at the center of the phone and not
at the sides as other music phones. It is also easy to
text since one can choose the “Quick Text” icon on
the front screen that opens the create message window at
one press. There is also a message counter which I find useful.
Its design is also sleek and even looks better than Nokia’s
low end phones. This phone is just perfect for those who
only want to call, text and listen to music.
Hurrah to Motorola for coming up with this beautiful,
reasonably priced, practical phone!
